Whitefield Academy building off impact of defensive 'shift' in year two under HC Robert Walsh
The Whitefield Academy Wolfpack football program had gone 15 years without a region title, however that streak came to an end in the first year under head coach, Robert Walsh, who also led the Wolfpack to the second round of the Georgia High School Association 1A Division I state championship tournament. “Everybody could see the shift already,” Whitefield defensive back and Georgetown commit, Bryson Logan said of the culture change as Walsh took over the program.
Explaining that the Wolfpack relied more or then offense in his first two seasons, Logan shared that he and Walsh immediately shared his intent to place a lot of focus on the defensive side of the ball. “He came in first day letting me know when I had a meeting with him, ‘I’m going to be defensive heavy’, Logan said of his first conversation with Walsh. “I love that about him,” he added.
Now as Whitefield continues to prepare for their season opener against Walsh’s former school, Savannah Christian, Logan believes that the nerves of last season are behind them and they are working to take the next step. “Coming off of that season, we obviously want to go further. To me, second round isn’t good enough. Honestly, I’m trying to get to that championship in December,” Logan said, acknowledging that the Wolfpack will have their work cut out for them.
And with this being his last year of high school football, Logan knows the importance of his leadership to help Whitefield accomplish their goals this season. “Our team coming up, they’re kind of looking up to me and a couple of other guys because we’ve been closer to the goal of where we want to be,” Logan said, adding that his intent is not to come off as bossing his teammates around, but rather “hold my team accountable and I want them to hold me accountable as well,” he continued.
