For the Pace Academy Knights softball team, the 2026 season is underway as well as a new era, now under the direction of new head coach, Dean Burrell. And while the Knights have started the season with a 4-1 mark, with plenty of softball to go, Burrell says the Knights "have a lot of work to do," as the season progresses.
"A lot of youth on the team. We do have some experience coming back, we really have to start working on some stuff," Burrell said following the Knights' win over North Atlanta on Monday, explaining that while he his pleased with his team's start to the season, there are some areas he would like to see some improvement.
"We have to fix some stuff, just mental mistakes and we'll go to work tomorrow and we'll get it done," Burrell said of preparing for the remainder of the week in which they face Riverwood, Cartersville and Lambert, praising his players for what they have been able to do offensively.
"I think we have had some decent at bats. We have a few that are hitting the ball well, but we have to do a better job of moving runners around. We're getting runners in scoring position with less than two outs and we're not scoring. So we have to fix that," Burrell said of what he would like to see from his team moving forward.
Pace Academy's wins have come against Dunwoody, Northside-Columbus, St. Pius X and North Atlanta. The Knights' lone loss came at the hands of Cambridge. The Knights are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Riverwood.
