St. Pius X seeing growth and maturity as 2026 season is underway

The St. Pius X Golden Lions officially kicked off their season on Tuesday when they traveled to Dunwoody High School to face the North Atlanta Warriors and Dunwoody Wildcats in a non-region tri-match and walked away with two victories after defeating the Warriors 2-1 and the Wildcats 2-0.
"They worked hard. They really did a good job, especially moving without the ball," St. Pius head coach, John Frederick, said following the Golden Lions season opening matches, praising his players for how well they "moved without the ball", an area which had been of some concern preparing for the season.
"They've had a tendency when they're not making the play right then to slack off, and they really worked hard tonight. You could tell they were taking that to heart and moving without the ball," Frederick said of the Golden Lions' performance in their season opening wins, crediting them for fixing problems they had during preseason scrimmages.
Now with their first two matches in the books and their minds focused on having a successful season with the hopes of making an eventual state title run, Frederick says the Golden Lions have traded youth from a year ago for experience this season.
"We started four freshman last year and they've grown up a little and my setters have both matured, they both run the offense with mush more confidence than they did last year," Frederick said of the growth his players are showing early flashes of. "We've got some great pieces as hitters and they're doing a good job of mixing it up and finding them," Frederick said of his group of setters which include juniors Eveliina Campbell, Catherine Morris and Anna Pattaras.
The Golden Lions will return to action on Thursday, when they take on North Gwinnett and Lakeside.
