The Milton Eagles girls lacrosse team has been the most dominating program in Georgia High School Association history since the sport became a sanctioned during the 2004-2005 season, heading into Saturday's title match with the Creekview Grizzlies, having won 17 championships and the last seven state titles. And by game's end, the Eagles retained their title after defeating the Grizzlies 17-5.
"Our girls tonight just had experience playing in this game," Milton head coach, Tim Godby said after Saturday's win, praising his players for their performance, including several who were very familiar with state title wins. "We had four seniors that started as a freshman, this is their fourth year, so we knew the routine all year, we knew how to prepare," Godby said, of facing Creekview who they defeated earlier in the season.
"They cam out and punched at us first and it was a little bit close but nobody got frazzled, nobody got rattled, we just kept playing our game and we were going to make the plays that we needed to make and pull out," Godby said, crediting his players for keeping their composure throughout the game, which they only trailed once early when the Grizzlies led 1-0.
However, after a 5-0 run gave the Eagles a 5-1 lead, the closet Creekview would get within Milton would be three goals, once in the first quarter and later in the second quarter just before halftime. In the third quarter, Milton would outscore the Grizzlies 6-0 to take a 13-4 lead into the fourth quarter and eventually pick up the 17-5 win. The Eagles had two players finish with a team high three goals, junior Kylie Waters and sophomore Lillian Katula.
