Decatur High School Cancels Sports Until September 25 Due To COVID-19 Concerns
On Tuesday, Decatur High School student athletes and parents found out that the school will be cancelling all sports related activities until September 25 due to growing concerns over COVID-19. The news came via a newsletter in which City of Decatur Schools superintendent, David Dude, stated, "Athletics, activities, and clubs will be moving to the virtual environment. We will be working with coaches and activity sponsors to brainstorm ways to continue building teams and communities through online activities." Dude added, "We are well aware of the mental health benefits of such interactions, especially when they can be done in person, and do not make this decision lightly." The cancellation means that the Bulldogs football team will miss their first three games of the season and the softball team will miss their first eight games.
