The 2025 Georgia High School football season is just a couple of weeks away and teams around the state took part in scrimmage action on Friday, including the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack, who hosed the Lovett Lions and for both teams, Friday's provided the first opportunity for each team to finally get some form of contact against someone other than themselves.

"I think the biggest thing for us is getting the mistakes out of the way. That's what's great about two scrimmages," Whitefield Academy head coach, Robert Walsh said following Friday's exhibition against Lovett, which he noted multiple issues the Wolfpack had, however, have thew opportunity to correct prior to the start of the regular season.

"That's stuff we can work on next week and hopefully improve. Usually from week one to week two, that football team looks a lot different, so that's what I'm hoping," Walsh said of areas the Wolfpack will need to clean up and "get better from it," ahead of their season opener against Savannah Christian, where Walsh coached previously prior to taking over at Whitefield Academy, who will really on their underclassmen to play pivotal roles this season.

"What's really cool this year is we have 70 guys out for football," Walsh said of the Wolfpack program which heads into their third season with him at the helm. And while he noted majority of their freshman, with the exception of cornerback, Karson Lewis, would not be suiting up at the varsity level, the sophomore class will be called on often.

"The sophomore class is going to have to step up in some spots. I saw some good things from a couple kids tonight that I think we'll be able to build off and they'll gain confidence from, but we have to continue to coach them up and make them grow up fast because we're going to need them," Walsh said.

For Lovett, this season will mark the 21st with head coach, Mike Muschamp leading the Lions and while the excitement of getting another season underway is still there for the longtime coach, with having graduated 27 from last year's team, Lovett will have one thing in particular to establish.

"Trying to find a new identity so to speak with this group and get some guys to step up and fill in for us and see what they can do," Muschamp said of the Lions also having to rely on younger players having to be essential to the season. "I thought we did tackle pretty well for a first game, so I liked that," Muschamp said as he shared thoughts of takeaways from Friday's scrimmage.

"We've got some good leadership," Muschamp said of the 14 seniors leading the Lions this season in addition to "a good junior class," who he believes will also play important roles this season. "Excited about that," Muschamp said of his team. Lovett will open up against long time rival, Westminster, in another addition of the "Battle of Buckhead" on August 15.
