The 2025 Georgia High School Association basketball season is beginning to wind down for the M.L. King Lions boys basketball team and on Tuesday, after 17 games played on the road, the Lions hosted their first home game of the season as renovations to their gymnasium had finally been completed.
"Two-thirds of the season, first sixteen games, going away from this place and playing in the comfort of other peoples' gym, it gets taxing, it get challenging," M.L. King head coach, Nicholas Harris said of the Lions having to be on the road for nearly their entire season.
"To have that chance to play at our school and represent our school and have our fans get to see a game, I couldn't ask for nothing better than that," Harris continued as he discussed the feeling of the Lions hosting their first home game of the season as they took on Charles Drew, who they would defeat 74-67, led by sophomore Chisimdi Agbasi with 30 points.
And while the Lions were able to close out the night with a victory, it was one they found themselves having to battle from behind throughout majority of the night as they trailed 19-12 by the end of the first quarter, which they led just once when they took the early 2-0 lead.
"Playing until the next play. You can't let outside elements frustrate you," Harris said of the message he emphasized throughout the night to his players as they would eventually tie the game in the third quarter, however would not regain the lead until late in the fourth quarter.
"You can't let anything throw you off your mission. Right now, we have to get through every game whether we did something good, whether we did something that was mistake, we have to be able to play through that and the resiliency is going to show," Harris said, which would be the case for his team on Tuesday. "We all have to be on one accord when it comes to getting to the next play," Harris said following their win over the Titans, who was led by Ricky Moon with 36 points.
The Lions will return to their home gym on Friday when they take on the Mays Raiders in another region showdown and will play the remainder of the regular season schedule at home.
