Dunwoody heading into 2026 season motivated by 'unfinished business'
The Dunwoody Wildcats are getting set to kick off their 2026 Georgia High School Association flag football season, their seventh under head coach, Montez Swinney. "I'm so excited," Swinney said when asked, during the Wildcats scrimmage with Stephenson and Cross Keys, about getting another season underway as the Wildcats head coach, a program in which he has been a part of since it's inaugural season in 2020 when flag football was incorporated as a sanctioned GHSA sport.
"I love being able to give girls an opportunity. This year we have a freshman team, JV and a varsity and I just feel like it's my purpose and my calling to give these girls an opportunity," Swinney, "a girl dad," said of coaching the Wildcats program. "I'm excited," he added, noting Dunwoody's new motto for their 2026 campaign. "We have had a lot of success, but the motto this year is really, 'unfinished business' so I'm ready to roll this year," Swinney said.
"We had a pretty good season last year, but the way it ended, we got upset to be honest with you at the end," Swinney said as he explained how the 2025 season coming to an end in the opening round of that GHSA state championship last season, has given the Wildcats motivation to complete the task in 2026. "That's what they're really look forward to. They're still hungry, they're still ready to go. I honestly haven't had to do much to get them pumped and motivated because we have so many girls that have returned and to also get the younger girls motivated," Swinney said.
And as Dunwoody used their scrimmage as tune up ahead of their season opener against Mount Vernon and Marist on September 23, Swinney praised his team for their "mindset" in preparing for the season, showing eagerness to "go get it, be hungry and go back to the fundamentals at the end of the day. If you can do the fundamentals at a high level you can go anywhere," Swinney said.
