Lassiter tops Creekview to reach 7 wins for first time since 2013

Two weeks ago, the Lassiter Trojans earned their sixth win of the season, something they had not accomplished since 2017 and on Friday, the Trojans ended another drought as their 20-13win over the Creekview Grizzlies marked the first time the Trojans reached seven wins in a season since 2013, which was also the last time they won a region championship.
"They stayed," Lassiter head coach, Sean Thom, said of the Trojans senior players remaining with the program being an important factor to the team's success this season, including Friday's win, which came on a night in which the Lassiter hosted "Senior Night".
"It wasn't pretty, but it's like we said, those are the games you have to win when you get to the playoffs. They're not all going to be pretty," Thom said as the Trojans found themselves holding off a late Creekview rally, after a costly offensive series resulted in the Trojans turning the ball over deep in their own territory in the fourth quarter.
"Defense, heck of a performance, offense we shot ourselves in the foot all night long, special teams, first time we had a little blip there all year," Thom said of the Trojans' mishaps throughout the night, however praised his players for being able to "overcome" the challenges they had, crediting sophomore quarterback, Caden Jones, who threw for a touchdown and rushed for another, for the composure he displayed in leading the Trojans' offense. "I couldn't be prouder for them," Thom said.
Scoring for Lassiter came early as they capped the opening drive of the game with a 49-yard Jones touchdown pass to Bryce Kitzrow to take a 7-0 lead. Later in the opening quarter, senior kicker, Gabe Salomone, connected on a 44-yard field goal to extend Lassiter's lead to 10-0.
In the second quarter, the Grizzlies would cut the Trojans' lead to three points thanks to a Landon Barnes touchdown pass to JD Russell, but on the ensuing Lassiter possession, Jones would rush for his second touchdown of the night to help the Trojans take a 17-7 lead. In the third quarter, Creekview's Jax Howard would rush for the Grizzlies second touchdown of the night, however, the extra point attempt would be blocked by Lassiter as they led 17-13.
Later in the third quarter, Salomone would connect on another 44-yard field goal to extend the Trojans; lead to 20-13, but the Grizzlies would find themselves in position to tie or take the lead late in the fourth quarter after bad snaps by the Trojans would allow them to take over deep in Lassiter territory. As the Grizzlies drive continue, a third and goal pass attempt would be intercepted by Lassiter's Parker King, allowing the Trojans to take over and run the clock out.
