'Chemistry' and 'buy in' key as Riverwood looks to maintain momentum

The 2026 Georgia High School Association softball season is well underway and the Riverwood Raiders have found themselves with a 10-3-1overall record and a 3-0 region record under new head coach, Jason Russo. "It's been a lot of fun," Russo said of the Raiders success over the past couple of weeks in which they have won six of their last seven games, with the non-win resulting in a tie and their last three wins coming against region opponents
"It's huge getting these wins and I think our non-conference schedule has really helped out a lot," Russo said, praising his players, including senior pitcher and South Carolina commit, May Weis, who reached 500 career wins last week. "She's been doing an excellent job." Russo said of Weis and noting the move of sophomore Sydney Jimenez to catcher has proven to be beneficial for the Raiders as well as the play of senior Zoey Taylor at shortstop. "She's got a cannon over there," Russo said of Taylor.
As for the momentum the Raiders have found of late, in their last six wins, they have scored six runs or more and Russo credited his team for their efforts to "put the ball in play", encouraging them that "good things happen" when they are able to complete the task. "That's what we've been doing and we've been really aggressive on the bases and have been really smart and the girls are starting to get behind each other and when you have that chemistry from the dugout onto the field and getting behind everybody, good things happen," Russo said.
On Thursday, the Raiders will continue to region play as they travel to Johns Creek and then will host Milton on September 15 and then travel to face Gainesville in a double-header on September 17 and Russo his players continuing to "buy into what we're trying to do with this program," and continued run support for Weis on nights she is pitching well, can help Riverwood continue to find success. "If we continue this team chemistry, only good things can happen," Russo said.
