As the second half of the Georgia High School Association basketball season has gotten underway, defending champs, the Holy Innocents Golden Bears hosted the Lovett Lions in a region showdown with the Golden Bears looking to keep momentum with a fifth straight win, while the Lions looked to remain unbeaten in region play.
While Lovett had early momentum opening up the game on a 7-2 run, Holy Innocents responded with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 8-7 lead, never relinquishing it in route to a 56-51 win, improving to 12-2 on the season.
"We're trying to get these guys to connect," Holy Innocents, head coach, Mario Mays, said following Wednesday night's win. "It's just the truth, if you're going to be a good team, you have to be connected through the good and the bad," Mays said as he explained the importance of his players learning to battle challenges throughout the season.
"You know, people make runs so it's about how you compose yourself doing their run," Mays continued as he discussed the importance of the Golden Bears' players learning to 'stay level headed, stay together" regardless of the adversity they may face in games. "It's part of the game, because then we make our run," Mays said.
The Golden Bears were led by Devin Hutcherson, who reached 1.500 career points during the game, with 19 points and will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Therrell Panthers on Tuesday in another region matchup.
