Westlake gets revenge with win over East Coweta for region championship

On Thursday, the Westlake Lions buys basketball team found themselves facing the one team who handed them their only region losses of the season as they took on the East Coweta Indians for the Georgia High School Association Class 6A Region 2 championship. And while Westlake entered the region tournament as the number one overall seed, their final regular season game resulted in a senior night 61-58 senior night loss.
"This was a very important game to us," Westlake senior, Johnson Besong, said of the Lions matchup with East Coweta, which provided them with an opportunity to earn a revenge win. "We dropped the first two games to them and the last one on senior night, that really hurt us, so this has been on our mind since then," Besong said of Thursday's rematch which Lions got off to a strong start outscoring the Indians 28-13 in the opening quarter.
"We'd been preparing in practice, over and over, every single rep, every single shot, we've been practicing, making sure we get it in to be ready and it showed today," Besong continued and in the second quarter, Westlake continued to control the game, as they would once again outscore East Coweta, this time 23-10 to take a 51-23 lead by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lions dominance continued as they would end the period with a 73-31 lead and go on to pick up the 79-39 win to claim the region title and number one seed and will prepare for the number four seed out of Region 6.
"We just have to be ready at home, one game at a time. Our coach always says, every night it's 1-0 so we just have to go back to the drawing board, keep getting ready, keep putting in the practice and be ready for a home game," Besong said.
