Cass Tops Riverwood 82-73 Thanks To Late Fourth Quarter Run

Cass guard Sacovie White drives against Riverwood's Alan Reid

On Monday, the Cass Colonels got their week started on the road as they visited the Riverwood Raiders. The Colonels headed into Monday’s looking to get back on track as they were coming off a loss to Paideia over the weekend, while the Raiders looked to snap their five game losing streak. Cass would open up the game on 14-2, but the Raiders would battle their way back into the game closing out the opening quarter outscoring the Colonels 16-8 and would trail 20-18 heading into the second quarter.

Momentum would stay in favor of the Raiders as they would outscore the Colonels 19-17 in the second quarter and the game would be tied 37 all at the half. The Raiders would continue to have the hot hand in the third quarter as they outscored Cass 25-23 and thanks to a put back basket by Jalen Leonard, Riverwood would take their first lead of the game as they went up 62-62. Unfortunately for the Raiders, Cass would own the fourth quarter, as they would outscore Riverwood 22-11 in route to a 82-73 win.

Following the game, Cass head coach Byron Taylor said that wins like Monday’s are important for his young team. “We have a very young team. A lot of guys that haven’t played a lot of minutes at the varsity level so every rep in practice, every rep in a game is just adding more experience, we’re just trying to gain confidence with every rep,” Taylor said following Monday’s win. Taylor would credit “defensive stops” being key in their win over Riverwood, saying that that’s something he would like for his team to continue to get better at as the season progresses. “We really want to focus on getting multiple stops,” Taylor said.
