Brookwood pounds the ground in win over Norcross to claim the No. 2 seed
The regular season came to an end for the Brookwood Broncos and Norcross Blue Devils on Friday as the two teams battled for rights to the number two seed out of Georgia High School Association Class 6A, Region 7, with the loser falling to the number three seed position.
As the game got underway, early action would see the Blue Devils score on the opening kickoff as Jamari Harold returned the the ball for a 70-yard touchdown as Norcross would take the early 7-0 lead. However the Broncos would respond almost immediately on the ensuing possession after a 43-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Brayden Tyson, tying the game 7-7 after the extra point.
Unfortunately for both offense though, neither would be able to reach the end zone for the remainder of the half, however they would each tack on a field goal as the game remained tied 10-10 at halftime.
"You know, everything didn't go our way in the first half with the opening kickoff for a touchdown that they score, but then the defense was just resilient," Brookwood head coach, Chad Nighbert, said after Friday's win, praising the Broncos' defense for not allowing another Norcross touchdown.
"We gave up some yards, but we didn't give up any points. We gave up two field goals and that's it. I mean if you can just give up two field goals in a half or in a game, you're doing something real special," Nighbert said.
And while both defenses had strong showings in the first half of Friday's contest, the Broncos would find life offensively in the second half behind their ground game as Tyson would score on a 77-yard rushing touchdown on the third play of the opening drive of the third quarter, helping Brookwood take a 17-13 lead.
"Our offense was struggling, especially in the first half, they really couldn't get a whole lot going," Nighbert noted of the Broncos struggles before their rush attack picked up with Tyson rushing for 298 yards and three touchdowns, with his third coming in the fourth quarter that helped the Broncos take a 25-13 lead after a two-point conversion.
"He's way faster than people give him credit for, he'll run away from you," Nighbert said of Tyson's performance. "He's a great back, he does a fantastic job and like I said, he can run inside, he can run outside, he can cut back, he can see the hole. He's a very dangerous back which is why everybody in the country wants him," Nighbert added on Tyson.
Both the Broncos and Blue Devils will have the week off next Friday and then begin the state championship tournament on November 15 as the Broncos will host West Forsyth while Norcross will travel to Lambert.
