Georgia's 2nd Ranked Lady Blue Devils Cruise To First Round Win As Norcross Defeats West Forsyth


On Saturday, Georgia's No. 2 team, the Norcross Lady Blue Devils hosted the West Forsyth Wolverines in the opening round of the Georgia High School Association 7A State Playoffs. The would get things going quickly as #12 Jr. Tehya Lyons would score to lift the Blue Devils 4-0 over the Wolverines. Norcross would then go on a 5-0 run before West Forsyth would get their first basket as Norcross led 9-2 with 6:00 to go. The Lady Blue Devils would continue to poor it on as Lyons (19 pts, 5 stl) and #11 Sr. Taylor Mason ( 15 pts) would lead Norcross on another 8-0 run as they took a 17-2 lead with 4:08 to go in the first quarter.

As play continued, the Wolverines had no answers for the Blue Devils as Norcross’ defense stifled the West Forsyth offense production and the Blue Devils continued to find their way to the basket at will taking a 25-4 lead with 1:40 to go in the opening period. The Blue Devils would go on to hold on to a 27-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. As the second quarter began, West Forsyth would get a 3-point basket to cut the Norcross lead to27-8 but the Blue Devils would answer back with a steal and layup by #25 Sr. Vanessa Blagmon ( 17 pts) to go up 29-8 with 5:00 to play in the first half. As the quarter continued, West forsyth would manage to get a couple of baskets but defensively still had no answers for Norcross as the Blue Devils maintained a 35-12 lead with 1:25 to go in the first half.

The Blue Devils would go on to end the first half leading West Forsyth 35-14. West Forsyth would open up the second with a 4-2 run but Norcross’ defense would quickly begin to cause problems for the Wolverines as they would use their second to last timeout with 5:13 remaining in the third quarter as Norcross led 39-18. With time winding down in the quarter, West Forsyth would cut the lead to 19 but Lyons would draw a shooting foul and lift the Norcross lead back to 20 after making the first of two foul shots as the Blue Devils led 46-26 with 2:10 to go in the third and Norcross would go on to hold a 49-29 lead at the end of the period.

As the fourth period began, Norcross turnovers would allow West Forsyth to go on a 4-0 run to cut the Blue Devils lead down to 18 forcing Norcross to take a timeout with 6:10 to go and the Blue Devils leading 49-33. Out of the timeout, the Blue Devils would respond with 8 unanswered points to take a 57-33 lead with 3:00 to go in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils would then go on a 8-5 run to win their opening round of State by a final score of 65-38. The Lady Blue Devils will take on the Marietta Blue Devils in the second round.
