Westminster Cruises In 22-1 Win Over Darlington To Open Playoffs
On Wednesday, the Georgia High School Association lacrosse playoffs got underway way and in 1A-5A first round action, the Westminster Wildcats hosted the Darlington Tigers. The Wildcats would waste no time getting on the scoreboard as Carter Frieden would connect on a goal 22 seconds into the game to give them the early 1-0 lead. After Westminster took a 2-1 lead, a free position shot for Darlington’s Amelia Whitefield would be good to put the Tigers on the board as they trailed 2-1.
Despite several defensive stops by Darlington’s Liz Boyd, in net for the Tigers, following a Westminster timeout, the Wildcats would hall off 10 unanswered goals to take a 12-1 lead by the half. In the second half, the Wildcats would continue to roll with momentum in their favor as they would shut the Tigers out in the second half while adding 10 more goals of their own to go on to pick up the 22-1 win, advancing to the second round of the playoffs. Westminster’s Kate Quigley would lead all players with five goals.
After the win, when asked about the conversation during the timeout, Westminster head coach Katie Trainor said, it was merely a “pep talk”. “The conversation was we’re better than we were playing and our focus was on setting the tempo, being aggressive, and playing our game from the start and we weren’t doing that,” Trainor said. She went on to add “so it was just a little pep talk to remember how we can play and what we needed to do to put ourselves in position to succeed.”
