St. Pius X Pushes 14 Into Sectionals, Wins Traditional Region Title

The St. Pius X Golden Lions win the GHSA 6A Region 4 Traditional championship

On Saturday, the Georgia High School Association wrestling traditional region championships were held around the state as the North Atlanta Warriors hosted the Class 6A Region 4 championship. While the Warriors themselves would finish the day in fourth, the St. Pius Golden Lions would have a historic day as they would not only win the championship, they would also push 14 wrestlers through to the sectional round of the traditional tournament.

The 14 Golden Lions headed to Lanier next weekend marked the first time in program history that St. Pius has ever sent that many wrestlers to the sectionals. “We’ve been talking all week, we’ve got to get 14 to guys to sectionals and we got 14 to sectionals,” St. Pius X head coach, Mike Lancaster said after the Golden Lions historic win, “that speaks volumes for us,” Lancaster added. St. Pius had seven wrestlers advance to the champion round on Saturday, with Ben Tomasello giving them their first win at 113 pounds as he defeated Dunwoody’s Alex McKissick by fall in the second round.

Now as St. Pius begins to prepare for the sectionals, Lancaster says it will be important for the Golden Lions to “keep doing what they’ve been doing,” as he praised them for their work ethic leading up to their win on Saturday. “They’ve done a great job,” Lancaster said noting that his wrestlers simply need to “keep working on what they’ve been doing, stay within themselves, don’t try to do too much and we’ll be ok,” Lancaster added.
