On Thursday, the Lovett Lions hosted the Trinity Christian Lions in the second round of the Georgia High School Association baseball state championship tournament, Private bracket as Lovett returned to action after earning a first round bye.
With Game 1 underway, the time off seemed to have some impact on Lovett as they found themselves trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, however, that would be when their bats came alive as they scored six unanswered runs in the inning and would go on to pick up the 10-5 win.
Carrying momentum with them into Game 2, Lovett jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a three run first inning and then adding two more runs in the top of the second inning, before tacking on their sixth run in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI single by Will Green.
Slowly chipping away at the Lovett lead, Trinity Christian would find themselves down two runs by the bottom of the seventh inning after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then two more in the final frame of the night, however would fall short after pitcher Luke Darsey would strike out TCS' Logan Moss for the third out of the inning.
"Hats off to Trinity Christian. We knew they were a good ball club," Lovett head coach, Lance Oubs, said following Thursday's series as he praised Trinity Christian for their efforts in challenging Lovett. "They gave us everything for two games," Oubs added.
For Lovett themselves, Oubs credit his players for overcoming early setbacks after falling behind in Game 1 before eventually getting the come from behind win. "I told my guys after the first game, we probably played as poorly in the first three or four innings than we had played all year and my hat goes off to them for competing," Oubs said of his team and the resiliency they displayed.
Lovett will now move on to face Wesleyan on Wednesday in the third round of the state championship tournament.
