The Georgia High School Association Class 5, Region 4 girls basketball tournament got underway with the Lakeside Vikings taking on the Decatur Bulldogs in the opening round as the Bulldogs looked to avoid a third loss to the Vikings this season.
As the game got underway, Decatur would outscore Lakeside 14-1 in the first quarter, led by Nadiyah Mohamed, who scored nine of her 18 points in the opening period, however the Vikings would settle down in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs, 25-4 in the period to take a 25-18 lead by halftime.
"After the first quarter, we just had to do a gut check. We had to settle down, settle in," Lakeside head coach, Lakia Morton said following the Vikings' win on Monday, crediting her players for their ability to overcome the first quarter deficit they faced.
"Once we settled in, played our defense, try to be ourselves, try to stay disciplined," Morton says the Vikings were able to work their way back to tie the game in the second quarter and eventually take their first lead, which they never relinquished as they would go on to pick up the 59-42 win, advancing to the second round of the region tournament, where they will take on Woodward Academy.
"We're going to have to work on everything. Controlling the ball, playing with our pace, trying to slow them down some," Morton said of what she wants her Vikings to work on as they prepare for Woodward Academy.
