GHSA nearly votes unanimously to implement new points based system to determine playoff teams

ree

On Monday, the Georgia High School Association voted to make a major change in regard to how teams accross all classification will earn the right to participate in postseason play. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the GHSA executive committee voted 66-1 in favor of implementing a points formula to select and seed teams for the playoffs.

The move comes as GHSA's effort to award teams the right to participate in postseason play based on their in-state strength of schedule versus their finish in the region standings upon completion of the regular season. The current system, awards the top four teams, in their respective order, a one through four seeding position, however in the new points model, called the Post Season Rankings, only the region champion will be awarded a postseason berth with the new points system determine the remaining teams to reach the playoffs.

“Our goal is to make sure we’ve got the elite eight in the elite eight and the best four in the final four and the best two in the state championship,” GHSA executive director Tim Scott said following the boards vote to implement the new system, which will happen at the start of the 2026-2027 season. “Using this formula is what the coaches and the committee felt will help us do that," Scott added.
