In a Week 2 showdown, the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack hosted the Mount Vernon Mustangs as both teams entered the night looking to bounce back from season opening losses. As the game got underway, the Mustangs would put together a solid opening drive, but would stumble after reaching the Whitefield 25-yard line as a fourth and three pass from Noah Dungan to Taurean Rawlins would fall incomplete as Whitefield corner back, Karson Lewis, was able to break up the play.
It would be on the ensuing possession in which the Wolfpack's dominance in the run game would be established as they would march down field and cap their 75-yard drive with the first of senior running back, Mason Hollingsworth's, five touchdowns.
"We definitely changed the mindset for the game coming in. Last week we showed what we could do and today we just executed the whole game and played to our best abilities," Hollingsworth said of Whitefield's 34-point victory on Friday.
As the game entered the second quarter with Whitefield Academy leading 7-0, the Wolfpack defense would force the Mustangs to punt the ball and on the first play of the ensuing possession, Hollingsworth would break for a 62-yard touchdown run to help Whitefield Academy take a 14-0 lead.
And while Mount Vernon would respond on their next possession with a touchdown of their own thanks to a Harrison Mills rushing touchdown, the Wolfpack defense would hold their own, keeping the Mustangs out of the endzone until they were able to get a second rushing touchdown from Mils, however by then, the Wolfpack had added three more rushing touchdowns by Hollingsworth and lead 35-14 after the Mount Vernon score.
"Without them, I wouldn't have been able to do anything I did today," Hollingsworth said as he praised the Wolfpack's offensive line for their efforts up front which allowed him and the Whitefield Academy running game to be successful against the Mustangs' defense. "The whole offense was just a well oiled machine tonight. We did everything we could, we executed our plays," Hollingsworth added.
Whitefield moves to 1-1 on the season and will have the week off before returning to action when they travel to take on Social Circle in two weeks.
