Cambridge Wins Outright Region Title With Win Over GAC Spartans

Crown them region Queens. The Cambridge Bears softball team continued their region dominance on Thursday with a convincing 12-0 win over the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans. With the win, their fourth in a row, Cambridge improved to 10-0 in the region standings (19-4 overall) and with a three game lead over Chattahoochee and just two region games remaining, are the outright region champs.

The win also gave the Bears the season series sweep over the Spartans and they got things going immediately in the bottom of the first inning taking a 1-0 lead following a pass ball by Spartans’ pitcher Abbey Duke and then later Cambridge first baseman, Amari Givers would take the first pitch she saw over the fence in right field for a two run home run to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

With Jayda Braithwaite on the mound for Cambridge, the Bears would get a solid performance from her as she would not allow any hits thanks to the backing of the Cambridge defense. Offensively, the highlighted performance for the Bears would be by Givers, who went 3-3 on the day and that included a second two run home run in the bottom of the second inning and a double off the wall in center in the bottom of the third inning.

“Solid team effort all around,” Cambridge head coach, Chris Davis said after Thursday win, which gave them their fourth straight win following their previous 10 game win streak being snapped over the weekend. “We challenged the girls to keep playing good defense, which we’ve done and getting our bats going, getting good quality at bats. Proud of the girls,” Davis said of their performance.

And while the win on Thursday helped the Bears lock up the region championship, Davis says that he and his staff will still want the Lady Bears to “continue doing what we’re doing,” as they will soon be preparing for the super region tournament. “And that’s just coming out and taking it one pitch at a time,” Davis said and adding “we’ve got a good group of girls”. Davis also spoke on Givers’ night that included the two, two run home runs. “She’s just been doing a good job for us all year. Battling, good senior leader for us, just working her butt off. So proud of her,” Davis said of Givers.
