Central Devils Open Season With 42-18 Win Over Mays Raiders In Inaugural Cam Newton Classic
On Saturday, Carolina Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton hosted his first annual C1N Classic featuring three teams from Georgia hosting three teams from Alabama.. The classic kicked off with Westlake (Georgia) defeating Lanier (Alabama) 45-6 followed by Clay-Chalkville defeating Griffin (Georgia) 35-20. In the night cap, the Mays Raiders (Georgia), coming off a 42-26 loss to Norcross in their season opener, took on the Central Devils (Alabama), who stepped onto the field for their first game of the season.
Penalties and good defensive stances by both teams would keep the game scoreless after the first quarter, but a minute in the second quarter, the Raiders would strike first as Jahquez Evans would find Terrance Morton in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown and Mays would take a 6-0 lead. The Devils would answer back immediately as Robert Marsh would return the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and the Devils would take a 14-6 lead. Later in the second quarter, Central running back Amontae Spivey would break loose and rush for a touchdown that would give the Devils a 21-6 lead.
And in the third quarter, two more touchdowns, including a blocked punt scooped up by Devonte Mathews and returned for a score and a pick six by Damon jones, would push the Devils lead to 35-6. Central would go on to win by a final of 42-18. Bigger than the loss of the game for the Raiders, is the apparent loss of starting quarterback, Jahquez Evans, who went down in the second quarter with what looked to be an injury to his left hand.
