Lady Eagles Soar To 1A Public State Title As Drew Charter Defeats Trion 3-2 In Girls Tennis


On Saturday, the Georgia High School Association Tennis Championships got underway at the Clayton County International Park Tennis Center. In Girls Class 1A Public action, the Trion Lady Bulldogs faced the Drew Charter Eagles in one of the first matches of the day. The Lady Eagles would get the early advantage when sisters Autumn (6-0, 6-0) and Summer Clemons (6-1, 6-0) would both pick up victories in Singles 1 and 2 giving Drew Charter a 2-0 lead.

Trion would then win both doubles matches knotting things up 2-2 and making the Singles 3 match the deciding match for the 1A Public title. Naima Cooper would represent for the Lady Eagles in the final match and would come up victorious winning 6-0 and 6-1 to give the Lady Eagles the win and their first ever State Championship.

The win was also the first State Title in school history. Following the win, the Drew Charter Head Coach spoke briefly about the win and the performance of the Cooper and the Clemons sisters. "Just an overwhelming feeling right now! I am so proud of the girls. Autumn and Summer, they always bring it and played great today. And Autumn, she's our closer and her game was great! So happy for our girls and how they played today!"
