Lady Hornets Claim GHSA 2A Region 6 Title As South Atlanta Defeats KIPP

On Thursday, the South Atlanta Lady Hornets hosted the KIPP Lady Warriors for the Georgia High School Association Class 2A Region 6 Championship. The Lady Hornets had only suffered one Region loss while the Lady Warriors were undefeated in Region play. Both teams would play solid defense throughout the first half but it would be South Atlanta who would strike first when #10 Lawrencia Simon would keep the ball for a fast break and score the goal giving the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half.

Only three minutes would pass before KIPP would tie the game after the South Atlanta goalie’s attempted throw came up short and the Lady Warrior’s #2 Mekindia Martin would catch the Lady Hornets off guard and score to tie the game at 1-1 with seven minutes to go in the half. The game would remain tied at one going into halftime. In the second half, defense by both teams would once again dominate the half as both teams would fail to connect for a score on several attempts in 23 minutes of play.

However a pick up by the KIPP goalie after the ball was passed back by her own player would lead to a penalty kick for the Lady Hornets and #1 Jessie Dominguez would drive the ball in for the score to lift South Atlanta 2-1 over KIPP with seven minutes remaining. The Lady Warriors would have a couple good looks to tie the game but would fail to do so as the South Atlanta Lady Hornets would go on to win by a final score of 2-1 to become the GHSA 2A Region 6 Champions.
