Familiarity may have been the word of the night for the Lambert Longhorns boys lacrosse team as the faced the South Forsyth War Eagles for the Georgia High School Association Division III state championship, looking to complete their season with a perfect record as they entered the night at 21-0.
Having previously faced the War Eagles last month, when they defeated them 15-0, the Longhorns were prepared to face a South Forsyth team riding an eight game win streak and seeking their first state championship in program history. However, with a chance to claim their seventh state title in program history and first since 2022, Lambert would pick up a convincing 12-0 win, securing the championship.
"It's unbelievable," Lambert head coach, John Spaide, said after Friday night's victory, praising his senior players for finishing their high school career in the same manner in which they began it, as state champions. "They put their heart and soul into this year and it's a big difference and every kid stepped up to the plate , it's a brotherhood and the kids definitely showed up this year," Spaide said of his team's performance.
While the first quarter of the matchup end with Lambert leading 3-0, it would be in the second quarter in which the Longhorn began to take control of the game, scoring six goals in the period, led by senior Cole Greenfield, who scored three of his five goals in the period, helping Lambert take a 9-0 lead.
Meanwhile defensively, the Longhorns only allowed the War Eagles five shots on goal as goal keeper, senior, Luke Grasso finished with five saves in net for Lambert. "He save the best for last in the biggest game," Spaide said of Grasso's night. "He stepped up to the plate and had a unbelievable game. A shut out to finish his career in high school. It's unbelievable," Spaide added on Grasso's performance.
Now with Friday's championship win, Lambert has the most GHSA boys lacrosse state title wins, however Spaide explained how coming up short the last two seasons after winning back to back in 2021 and 2022 has taught the Longhorns a valuable lesson if they hope to add to their program's legacy.
"We can't get complacent. It's not given to get here every year, you have to work hard every single day and if the opportunity comes, it will be awesome to be here again next year," Spaide said.
