Marist, Blessed Trinity Split Forcing A Deciding Game 3
On Thursday, the Marist War Eagles and the Blessed Trinity Titans faced off for the Georgia High School Association 4A Baseball State Title in a best of three game series. It would be the Titans that would dominate in Game 1, ousting the War Eagles 11-1. As Game 2 got underway, the Titans appeared to be picking up where they left off in Game 1, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
But in the Top of the third inning, the War Eagle’s bats would heat up. With one out and bases loaded, #20 Sr. Jamie Taylor would connect for an RBI single to put Marist on the scoreboard as they trailed 1-2. The next batter, #2 Sr. Cassius Young would step to the plate, once again bases loaded and one out for the War Eagles, and come up with another RBI single for Marist as the War Eagles would tie the game at 2-2.
With bases still loaded and still only one out, #15 Sr. Chris Cathcart would drill a three run triple to right field and the War Eagles would take a 5-2 lead. The next batter for Marist would be #5 Sr. Will Goldberg, who would ground out but scoring the run from third making it a 6-2 game and that would be the score as the inning would eventually come to an end.
With #11 Sr. Connor Stephens on the mound, the War Eagles would hold the Titans scoreless over the next four innings and pick up another run in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 7-2 game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Marist would send in #4 Jr. Patrick Taylor to close out the game and despite a leadoff double by Blessed Trinity’s #5 Sr. Jake Lundkovsky, Taylor and the War Eagles would put the next three batters away to win Game 2 by a score of 7-2 and force a decisive Game 3, scheduled for Saturday with start time to be determined later.
