Tucker Tigers Coming Together "Quickly" For New Head Coach Wayne Jones

With just over four weeks to go before the first kickoff of the 2022 Georgia High School Association, the Tucker Tigers continue their preparations for the new season under the direction of new head coach, Wayne Jones. Jones, who previously coached in High Point North Carolina, is the Tigers second new head coach in two seasons, but Jones says, that has not stopped his players from coming together and competing for one another.

“The thing that’s impressed me the most is how quickly they have come together and how quickly they’re learning each other and actually starting to play for each other,” Jones said. He would add that it was something the Tigers displayed in various occasions over the weekend during the FCA Camp in which they won the team challenge, “they knew each other,” Jones said of his players and continued to say that their bonding has been “impressive” for him and his staff.

On the field, “fundamentals” will be a major focus point for the Tigers over the next few weeks as Jones says, “It was great to get a chance to work this past weekend, seeing different defense, seeing blitzes, so now we know what we have to do to set up our practices,” stressing that the Tigers will have to be fundamentally sound to be successful this season, while learning a new culture of football for the program under Jones direction.

“Well right now, they’re still learning and that’s the best thing about it is that they’re learning and they’re willing to listen,” Jones said of his players, “it’s our job to teach them”. The first year Tigers coach added that he and his staff are also focused on teaching their players how to be leaders on and off the field and in a way that they leave an imprint on the Tucker program. “When they say Tucker football, what are they going to hear? What do you do for the younger kids? How do you leave that legacy? They’re getting an idea of what leadership looks like,” Jones said.

The Tigers will open up the season on August 19 when they face county rival Miller Grove.
