Southwest Dekalb opens region play with win over Maynard Jackson
With the Georgia High School Association football season reaching the halfway mark of the regular season and teams beginning to enter region play, the Southwest Dekalb Panthers traveled to face the Maynard Jackson Jaguars in a region matchup, which would be also be the first region game of the season for both team.
After turning the ball over on their first possession, the Panthers would cap their second drive of the game with a rushing touchdown by quarterback, Braylon Carter on a first and goal play, taking a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Panthers would add two more touchdowns as Carter connected with William Bryant to help Southwest Dekalb take a 14-0 lead and then rush for his second touchdown later in the quarter as the Panthers took a 21-0 lead.
As the second half began, the Panthers took the opening kickoff and returned it for a touchdown courtesy of a Jordan Christie 99 yard return, taking a 28-0 lead and then later in the third, a Myson Perry, who would block a punt for a safety later in the game, rushing touchdown extended the Panthers lead to 35-0 after the extra point.
"Even though in the first quarter we didn't do what we expected to do, they didn't drop their heads," Southwest Dekalb head coach, Marion Bell, said as he credited his players for overcoming early setbacks in the game and continuing to "do your job" on each possession.
"We have a young group of guys. We have some older guys, but a lot of young guys and we have to stop folding with adversity and that's what we talked about. Adversity can't break us," Bell said. The Panthers continue region play region play next week when they face Druid Hills.
