Raiders Edge Out Vikings 30-29 For Third Place In GHSA Region 6 As Mays Defeats Northgate


In their final region games of the season, the Mays Raiders and the Northgate Vikings faced off in a winner take all type of match up. Both teams came into the night at 5-2 in the Georgia High School Association Class 6A Region 5 standings with the Raiders in third and the Vikings in fourth. The Raiders come out and score on their first possession after a 50 yard rushing touchdown by Tyree Nelson and after failing on the two point conversion, Mays would take a 6-0 lead.

The Vikings would respond on their first possession as they drove the ball down the field, they would cap off the drive with a rushing touchdown from quarterback Issacc Corbitt and take a 7-6 lead. In the second quarter, Jah'Quez Evans would help give the Raiders a 14-7 lead, but the Cameron Cruver's rushing touchdown would help the Vikings tie the game 14-14. Later in the second quarter, deep in their own territory, a dropped snap by Mays' Jaylon Dunson would lead to a safety to give Northgate a 16-14 lead.

In the Fourth quarter, the Raiders would regain the lead after Evans connected with Zaire Thorton for a touchdown pass and Mays would go up 22 14. after taking a 23-22 lead, the Vikings would find themselves trailing 30-23 with less than two minutes to go in the game and would make it a 30-29 game after a quarterback sneak by Corbitt. Northgate would then decide to go for the two point conversion and fail and the Raiders would pick up the win, maintaining sole possession of third place in the GHSA 6A Region 5 standings.
