Maynard Jackson Lady Jaguars Race To Region Title, Headed to Sectionals


Just two years ago, the Maynard Jackson Lady Jaguars capped off their 2016 season with their second straight Georgia High School Association 3A state championship. Fast forward to 2018 and the Lady Jaguars made it known in at the GHSA 5A Region 6 Championship that they have plans to regain the crown, winning the region title.

The Lady Jaguars racked up the points on Thursday thanks to first place wins in several events including Nykah Smith (55.14) in the Girls 400 meter dash as well as first in the 200 meter in a time of 24.53 and Queen Couch (11.94) in the Girls 100 meter dash as both girls punched their ticket into the sectionals.

Joining Smith and Couch in the sectionals will be Niya Benton-Andrews (55.72) who placed second in the 400 meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter dash and Jalyn Jones (2:26.99) who placed third in the 800 meter run. The Lady Jaguars would go on to win first as a team with a total of 175 points.

The Maynard Jackson boys team would also get into sections taking third overall with 99 points behind Grady (110) and North Springs (106). The North Springs Spartans would also have a decent day, as they got into sectionals on both the girls and boys side. Notable wins for the girls came in the 800 meter run as Kennedi Westin-Shields (2:19.78) would take the top spot while teammate Mikayla Dunn (2:24.74) would come in second.

The Lady Spartans would also claim first in the Girls 100 meter hurdles behind Jayda Drake-Howard's (13.74) win. The Grady Knights and the Riverwood Raiders would also have their boys and girls teams make sectionals. Watch highlights from the meet below now!
