Lithia Springs Wins Mini Playoff Series For First State Playoff Birth In School History
On Monday, the Banneker Trojans, Maynard-Jackson Jaguars and Lithia Springs Lions football teams all had to participate in a three team mini playoff series, with the winner advancing to the first round of the Georgia High School Association Class 5A state playoffs. The Trojans would win the early coin toss, leaving Lithia Springs and Maynard to battle in game one which would go into double overtime and ending with the Lions kicking a field goal to get the win to move on to the second game of the night.
In the second contest against the Lions would face Banneker and Lithia Springs would score first thanks to a touchdown pass from Kevin Mrortow to Malik Thompson as the Lions would go up 7-0. In the second half, despite several false start penalties against them, the Trojans would find the endzone themselves as Kobe Harris would pick up the rushing touchdown. Banneker would decise to go for two on the extra point try but Nick Williams pass would fall incomplete and the Lions would pick up the 7-6 win and advance to the opening round of the GHSA 5A playoffs for the first time in school history.
