Eagles Soar To First State Title Win As Milton Defeats Colquitt County 14-13 For GHSA 7A Championshi

In the final Georgia High School Association football game of the 2018 season, the Colquitt County Packers would face the Milton Eagles in 7A action and regardless of which team won, history would be made. For the Eagles, a win would bring the program their first state championship and a win for the Packers would make them the first team to begin and end their season with wins in the Mercedea Benz Stadium.

Defense would get momentum going for both teams early in the game. On the Packers opening drive, in the red zone Colquitt's Jaycee Harden would throw an interception to Milton's Jeremy Olagoke. On the ensuing possession for the Eagles, senior quarterback Jordan Yates would connect with Jack Nickel but a big hit by the Packers defense would force and fumble and Colquitt would regain possession of the ball. Unable to find the endzone, the Packers would have to settle for a field goal and take a 3-0 lead.

Milton would respond as Yates would toss a 60 yard bomb to Jordan Cox and the Eagles would go up 7-3. In the second quarter, two tough runs by Colquitt's Ty Leggitt would lead to a touchdown by the running back and the Packers would go back up 10-7. Late in the second quarter, Miltons' defense would come up with a sack on a Colquitt third down forcing the Packers to settle for a field goal before the half ended but the Eagles' defense would block the attempt and Colquitt would take a 10-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

Still 10-7 going into the fourth quarter, Milton's Joshua Edwards would take a direct snap and bulldoze his way into the endzone to give Milton a 14-10 lead. Later, the Packers would make good on a field goal and trail 14-13 and on their final attempt to regain the lead, the Packers would come up short and the Milton Eagles would get the 14-13 win for their first football state championship.
