Cartersville, No Problems With Westlake, Blank the Lions 31-0
The 4A Cartersville Purple Hurricanes show they are ready to battle higher
classifications in Georgia. The States #1 team in AAAA, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the #1 Recruit in the nation for 2018 QB Trevor Lawrence, went to battle at Weinman Stadium Friday
night. A Game that doesn't typically happen due to the classifications in Georgia (4A
schools vs 7A schools), but the Purple Hurricanes showed and proved that they could
handle stiffer competition by beating the 2015 State champ in 6A, the Allatoona
Buccaneers 2 weeks ago, and blowing out rival Calhoun, last week to become 2-0. A
tougher test faced the Purple Hurricanes tonight...The 7A Westlake Lions.
The Hurricanes wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard first, after a stalled Westlake
drive. The Hurricanes drive the length of the field and running back Trey Creamer
scores the first touchdown of the game. Hurricanes up 7-0 after a sucessful Point After
Attempt (PAT). The first quarter was tough for Trevor, throwing the 1 st of his 2
interceptions on the evening. Picked off on a deep ball over the middle by 4 star
defensive back Myles “Spider” Sims. Westlake started to drive right down the field on
the Hurricanes, but a fumble late in the 1 st quarter gave the ball back to the Hurricanes.
Trevor Lawrence throws his 2 nd interception in the 1 st quarter, off of a tipped pass of the
finger tips of Jaden Hunter (UGA Commit), picked of by Isaiah Macintosh. Trevor was
roughed up a lot in the first quarter, being sacked twice, and flushed out of the pocket on
numerous occasions. He couldn't settle in as fast as he would have liked to.
The 2 nd quarter wasn't really a good one for the Westlake Lions, having 6 personal foul
penalty flags thrown against them and not effectively gaining yards on offense. Punting
the ball on every possession, setting the Hurricanes up with great field position
throughout the quarter. The Hurricanes also struggled to move the ball effectively, given
the amount of yards given to them by the Westlake personal fouls. Trevor finally finds
his rhythm on a drive right before halftime. Drives the length of the field and hits Jkhobe
Orr on a deep ball, to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room. The Purple Hurricanes come out the locker room on FIRE to begin the 2 nd half. They take a little under 3 minutes to score a touchdown and virtually put the game out of reach of the Westlake Lions. Trevor connected with his fullback, out of the backfield for an easy touchdown toss, which made the score 24-0. The Westlake Lions begin their fist drive of the 2 nd half with their 5 star defensive back AJ Terrell under center, playing quarterback....that didn't go according to plan. Punting the ball a after 3 and out, the deep
man for the Hurricanes muffed the punt, and Westlake recovers it at mid field. AJ Terrell
resumes QB play. Driving the ball all the way to the Hurricane 3 yard line. They come
away with nothing. Fumbling the ball at the 3 yard line on 4 th down with .32 seconds left
in the 3 rd, Trevor Lawrence throws his 3 rd touchdown pass on the evening, connecting with Avery Showell (Wake Forrest Commit) right down the middle of the Westlake secondary. With
the successful PAT, the score was 31-0 midway through the 4 th .
The contest tonight was riddled with penalty flags as Westlake took the bulk of the
negative yardage. I lost count after 10 personal foul flags were thrown during the game.
The refs were very short tempered with players mouthing off to other players after plays.
A couple of minor skirmishes happened more so in the 2 nd half, after plays, with
Westlake losing their cool. The game was not going their way, and it was very evident. I
asked Avery Showell after the game, what he thought about his teams performance
tonight and he stated that, “it was a good victory! We started off kind of slow, but we
started to click on all cylinders in that 2 nd half, and put the game away.”
