Arizona To Add Girls Wrestling For 2018 Season

On Thursday night, the Arizona Interscholastic Association announced that they would be adding girls wrestling to the upcoming 2018 winter season as an emerging sport. According to Executive Director of AIA, David Hines, "the coaches are the ones that really brought this up, feeling it's time. There are quite a few girls who want to wrestle in Arizona" Hines continued to add that "They're not having real good success having to wrestle against the boys." Hines also said that the plan is to have two or three invitationals for the girl wrestlers as well as a few jamborees thrown in prior to the end of the season individual state tournament. Hines added that "eventually, if we get enough schools, there will be team scoring" as well.
