Lady Raiders Cap Season With 6A Title As Mays Defeats Harrison 52-51


On Thursday, the Harrison High School Lady Hoyas would face the Mays High School Lady Raiders in the Georgia High School Association Girls Basketball 6A Championship Game. The game would remain close and low scoring throughout much of the first half but then Mays would go on a 6-0 run which included back to back baskets by #2 Sr. Kamiyah Street to give the Raiders a 18-11 lead with 3:09 to go in the first half. Harrison would finally answer back and cut the Mays lead down to four when #21 Jr. Mae Willis knocked down a three pointer. As the second quarter would come to a close, the Lady Raiders would take a 20-15 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the second half, Mays’ Street would get things going for the Raiders scoring on a layup just seconds into the third quarter but Harrison’s #12 Sr. Raicheal Tringali would respond knocking down a three pointer to make it 22-18 game. As play continued, the Raiders would maintain a 28-22 lead with 5:05 remaining and Mays would continue to lead by six until Harrison’s #1 Jr. Harper Vick would score a two point basket and draw a personal foul but would fail to complete the three point play and Harrison would trail Mays 33-29 with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter. As the period continued, Harrison would find themselves down only two and would tie the game at 33 off a two point basket by #24 Jr. Audrey Jordan with 1:45 to go.

The Raiders would go on to close out the period with a 37-33 lead after Street would score a two point basket with time winding down. In the fourth, the Raiders would score four unanswered points to take a 41-33 lead but Harrisons Jordan would score a three point basket to make it a 41-36 game in favor of the Raiders. With play continuing, Harrison would go on a 6-0 run to take the lead and go up 42-41 but the Raiders would answer back to regain the lead and eventually go up 45-42 after a quick 4-0 run of their own as Harrison would call timeout with 2:48 to go in the fourth.

Out of the timeout, Harrison would cut the Mays lead to one but Mays' Street would lift the Raiders back up by two after make 1-2 free throws and then would get sent to the line again and make 1-2 to lift the Raiders 49-46 with :30 to go in the game. Harrison would get another good look at tying the game but would miss on a three point attempt and the Raiders would rebound forcing Harrison to foul Street who would make 2-2 free throws giving Mays a 51-46 lead with :13 to go and the Lady Raiders would go on to win by a final score of 52-51 to become the GHSA Girls 6A Champions.
